Curbing Curiosity: Q&A About Middle School From Rising Sixth Graders

Starting middle school is a big step — and it’s normal to have lots of questions! To help ease the transition, we asked fifth graders to anonymously share what they’re curious or nervous about as they get ready for this new chapter. In this Q&A blog, we’re answering their real questions with helpful, honest information straight from the school district. Whether you're wondering about lockers, class schedules, or how to make new friends, we’ve got you covered!

Real questions about middle school from rising sixth graders

Will there be a written schedule?

All students receive a printed schedule of their semester 1 courses, which includes classroom numbers and times, on the first day of school. You will also be able to find your course schedule in StudentVUE

How many periods/classes are there in a day?

Your daily class schedule will have six periods/classes, which include English Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, Science, and two electives.

In addition, you will have Advisory two days a week and Level Up three days a week.

Advisory is a time where you will grow with peers as a community and engage in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons. Level Up is a time where you will receive instruction based on your needs — either in areas where you may need additional academic support or extension opportunities for greater challenge.

How do you know where to find the classrooms? How will I get around?

Each school hosts a back-to-school event before the school year begins, which is a perfect time to visit and explore your new school's campus. On the first day of school, all sixth-grade students meet together — usually in the gym or commons — for Sixth Grade Orientation. Then, you'll spend most of the first day meeting your eighth-grade mentors, touring campus, meeting teachers, and getting to know new friends. We assure you — there will be plenty of dedicated adult staff and student leaders all over campus the first week to help you find your way.

How much time will we have between classes?

The time between one class and the next is called a passing period. Passing periods are generally three minutes long.

Is there more than one floor?

It depends. Our middle school buildings are unique — some campuses feature one one-story building, others two-story buildings, and others multiple buildings that require you to walk outdoors to get from one place to another.

Why does school start so early?

FWPS middle schools start as early as 8 am, which may be a significant adjustment to elementary start times. Elementary, middle, and high schools have staggered start times to allow for our district-owned buses to serve multiple routes. Buses start at high school, then middle school, and finally serve elementary.

Are the teachers going to be rude like they are in the movies?

All FWPS schools are meant to be safe and welcoming environments for all students. Teachers are expected to treat each student with respect. If you experience conflict with staff, please report to a trusted adult so they can help you resolve the issue.

Is there going to be recess?

No, there is no official recess during middle school. However, during lunch, students can go outside for fresh air, talk, or play. There aren’t any playgrounds anymore, but each school has a playfield and other areas to relax and enjoy being outside.

Is there a lot of homework?

That depends. Generally, you will complete work during class, but if you don’t finish your classwork, it can turn into homework. There are also some projects that may require you to work from home.

Are the lunches good?

That depends on everyone's taste buds, but what we can say is that middle school lunches offer greater variety, which allows students to choose the menu items they like to eat the most. This includes daily pizza, burgers, and salad bar, along with a special entree of the day. As always, our meals have been student-tested, nutritionally balanced, and offer allergy-friendly and Halal options to meet all dietary needs.

Do you handle bullying quickly?

Yes, we take bullying seriously and work to respond in a supportive manner as quickly as possible. The faster we are made aware, the quicker we can provide help. If you experience or witness bullying-type behavior, please report it to a trusted adult so they can help provide support.

You've got this!

Starting something new can feel overwhelming, but you won’t be doing it alone. You have a strong support system at your school—including caring teachers, counselors, and staff — who are all here to help you feel safe, supported, and successful. You’ll also be connected with WEB Crew, our peer mentor program, where older students help sixth graders feel welcome, answer questions, and share what they’ve learned along the way. It might take a little time to get used to your new routine, but don’t worry—you’ll get the hang of it faster than you think!
