2019-20 Scholar Representatives to the Board Announced

In Federal Way Public Schools, incorporating student voice is central to informing the work of serving each of our 23,000 student-scholars. Students from the Scholar Advisory to the Superintendent team presented a recommendation and outlined the application and selection process for Scholar Representatives to the Board. An interview team selected the two finalists.

The purpose of scholar representatives’ participation at board meetings is to provide valuable input on school district operations.
We would like to recognize the Scholar Representatives to the Board for the 2019-20 school year:

• Amy Ojeaburu
• Blaise Clum

This effort is in support of district’s strategic plan goal 2: thriving, confident, responsible individuals.

The Multi-Service Center of Federal Way’s hosted a Back2School Resource Fair 

We are grateful for the Multi-Service Center of Federal Way’s support of scholars and families with the Back2School Resource Fair!

We would like to recognize Multi-Service Center Youth Case Manager Linsay Foster.

Over 500 students received backpacks, school supplies, clothing and other helpful resources to start the year ready to learn. The Federal Way Public Schools Office of Equity for Scholar and Family Success partnered with the Multi-Service Center to support this event.

We appreciate the Multi-Service Center and their commitment to our scholars. Efforts like these support our strategic plan goal 3 to help scholars be active learners and engaged, empowered, critical thinkers.

Community partners collect over 4,876 pounds of donated school supplies

We would like to thank our community partners for their involvement in the Fill the Canoe School Supply Drive. They helped collect over 4,876 pounds of donated school supplies. That’s 827 more pounds compared to last year!

We would like to recognize the following partners:

Brooklake Church helps beautify Illahee Middle School and donates $7,000 to the school and students

A big thank you to Brooklake Church for helping beautify the Illahee Middle School campus and donating $7,000 to the school and students!

We would like to recognize Brooklake Church’s outreach team member Jeff Waterfall who helped organize these efforts.

Before school started, over two dozen Brooklake volunteers helped clean garden beds, cut ivy, lay beauty bark and gravel and pick-up garbage. The money donated by Brooklake went towards school supplies and ASB cards for students so they can attend athletic events and other activities.

Grace Church and South King Fire & Rescue helps beautify Kilo Middle School

We want to thank Grace Church and South King Fire & Rescue for helping to beautify Kilo Middle School before the start of school!

We would like to recognize the following community partners:

• Assistant Chief Gorden Goodsell, South King County Fire & Rescue

A group of 50 volunteers joined Kilo staff to paint handrails and curbing, weed, trim plants and spread wood chips. Thank you for supporting our goal 2 whole child efforts. Your collaboration helped create a welcoming environment when scholars walked on to campus to kick off a new school year!

Mirror Lake Elementary Back-to-School Bash led by St. Luke’s Lutheran Church

Now in its tenth year, the Mirror Lake Elementary Back to School Bash led by St. Luke’s Lutheran Church was a big success!

We would like to recognize St. Luke’s Lutheran Church Pastor Dan Weber for this support.

Approximately 50 church volunteers helped assist 300 families at the event. Over 200 backpacks and supply packets, and 400 hot dog lunches were provided. In addition, 100 backpacks and 125 bags of school supplies were left at the school to be used by new students as they register at Mirror Lake throughout the year.

This is a great example of what happens when schools and community groups work together to make great things happen for kids. This effort is in alignment with the district strategic plan goal 3 to help scholars be active learners and engaged, empowered, critical thinkers.
